SketchMag Spotlight: David Michael Beck

So, I stopped by to introduce myself briefly to Rob Liefeld and I looked over to see David Michael Beck talking with Jim Valentino at the Image Comics booth! I met Dave at Free Comic Book Day and I hustled over to say Hi. I noticed he was carrying around a portfolio case with something bulging in it, but I let him get back to his conversation and went to make my introduction.

Later, I saw Dave near the Skystorm Studio/Sketch Magazine tables and beckoned him over. The stuff in his portfolio turned out to be oil paintings he’d done! They were amazing!

SketchMag Spotlight: David Mack

david-mack.jpgI met Dave years ago (at the last Chicago Con I attended actually). You all know that he’s done Kabuki and Daredevil for Marvel and a host of other things, but I was surprised to find out that he’d done a children’s book which I’ve definitely going to check out.

One of the best conversations I had over the weekend at Wizard World Chicago was with Paul Sizer, creator of the series Little White Mouse. Paul was definitely someone I wanted to catch while I was there, especially given his history of contributing to Sketch Magazine in the past (before my start as editor, but I got to peruse all the old issues when I did the index).

Paul definitely has some things coming up that I hope that you’ll check out, like B.P.M.!

Bill’s Wizard World Chicago Adventure, Day 3

June 30th, 2008 Bill Nichols Posted in Bill Nichols, General, conventions | No Comments »

Well, the final day I spent going around to meet a few more creators like Geof Darrow and a few others and then say my good-byes to the excellent guys from the Art Unleashed message board and many others.

It was a good show, although Michael Turner’s passing was sad.  You could still feel the regret in the venue on Sunday over that. It will stay for awhile to come…

Well, the day started off with the sad news if Michael Turner’s passing. So many people mentioned it and it just affected everyone.

I spent the day talking with several other contributors, past, present and future about Sketch.

Very cool day!
